It’s debate season again
and this season the West Side High School Debate
Team is being advised by Mrs. McGuire-Long, who is
also advisor of the Fashion Club, and the instructor
of sundry fashion based classes taught here at West
Side.
In the first debate of the season
held at Rutgers University on October 21, 2006,
Marquise Guzman, a junior, placed 12th
out of more than 50 debaters at the novice level.
Other members such as Ja’Kejah Motley, Qumare Cobb,
and Khadijah Davis also competed well.
At the second debate of
the season, Elijah Mercer and Marquise Guzman nabbed
a second place finish overall at the Newark Public
Schools Jersey Urban Debate League Novice Tournament
held at University High School on November 28,
2006. They swept all three rounds of debate,
defeating opponents University, Cicely Tyson, and
Central high schools to grab the second place
finish. They came up short to Science High
School. Ja’Kejah Motley and William Massie also
competed well.
The team is always
looking for fresh new faces and holds meetings on
Tuesdays and Fridays in Room 107 from 3:00 pm to
4:30 pm. Come out and join a team worth fighting
for!
