What
sets West Side apart from other Newark Public
Schools? What aspect of the school emits the ideals
of a business and finance academy? One thing is the
opening of West Side’s branch of Capital One Bank on
November 13, 2008.
What
was once the woodshop on the first floor has become
a brand new student run bank. The students, who have
been diligently working and training since July at
other Capital One locations, such as Journal Square,
Belleville, Passaic Park, Hoboken, and Nutley in
preparation for the opening, are Dalecia Apple,
Osman Beretey, Odain Brown, Khairaah Davis, Marcus
Garner, Satchmo Hastings, Oritseneye Oyowe, and our
two new employees Samantha Chavanga and Vera Dahn. A
former student of West Side, Mahogany Barnes, has
also been an employee at the bank.
Through
this experience the students have learned quality
customer service techniques and banking practices,
as well as the importance of responsibility,
dependability and teamwork. As a result of
interacting with corporate executives, CEO’s and
Presidents of
Capital One,
they
are experiencing the art of business conversation
and are transferring language skills and math skills
learned in the classroom to the real world of work.
These
students will continue working on Saturdays at
their other locations and they will have alternating
hours during the school day at the West Side Branch.
West
Side High School is the first school in the State of
New Jersey, and the second school in the country to
have a student run bank. The opening was an exciting
event with extensive media coverage and dignitaries
like Mayor Cory Booker and Superintendent of Schools
Mr. Clifford Janey in attendance. Many of our
students were even interviewed by the well-known
Maurice DuBois. It was a proud day for
