West Side alumnus donates book collection and delivers multicultural celebration keynote address

The following article was taken from the Westonian.

The staff development workshop of February 26, 2004 was multifaceted, multicultural and most memorable.

In a keynote address, Mr. Daniel J. Wacker, West Side alumnus and former social studies teacher, urged everyone to:  "Keep going.  If there is no freedom for all of us, there is freedom for none of us."

Mr. Wacker's commitment did not cease when he left West Side.  He came back because he still cares about Newark and appreciates Newark's rich history and vitality.

Mr. Wacker donated an extensive collection of African-American books, which will serve as the new African-American literature section of the West Side Media Center.  A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the installation of the literature section.

Dr. Gayle Griffin donated $1000 to the Media Center.

Students contributed to the program.  Katherine T. sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing."  Anthony G. recited two of his original poems.  The Gospel Chorus sang two spirituals, under the direction of Mr. Newsome.

The staff development workshop, consisting of reading, writing and thinking strategies, was facilitated by Dr. Brandon Doubek of the National Urban Alliance.

A luncheon, consisting of multicultural cuisine, was contributed by the West Side Staff.  Several staff members dressed in their native garb.  This, the third multicultural luncheon, has become an annual tradition.  The multicultural committee is headed by Ms. Small and included Ms Fergus, Ms. Tyson, Ms. Ringer, and Ms. Adjoga-Otu.
